Mom's Apple Pear Pie

DJ Holiday-3.JPG

I am beyond excited to share today’s post with y’all because one, it is with my beautiful mom, who by the way is 66 years old, can you believe that?! Mom, don’t be mad at me for saying that! And two, we’re sharing one of her classic recipes that is filed under my personal favorites! I’ve been enjoying this pie with her for years now, so it was super fun to finally learn how to make it together this year for the Holidays, and now we’re here to share it with you.

Friends, this isn’t any old pie. It’s a take on a classic apple pie but with a modern twist- pears, nilla wafers and cream cheese. Now that I’ve wet your appetite, keep reading for more on our day at the Double Oaks Bed and Breakfast, our festive outfit details, and of course…the recipe to Mom’s Apple Pear Pie.

So you’re hosting this year for the Holidays and you want everything to be just right, from the decor to the outfits, and who could forget the dessert. Does anyone else feel like sometimes it’s best to just go for dessert? Maybe it’s just me, but guilty as charged. I was born with a sweet tooth and a Mom who loves to bake.

For goodness sakes though y’all. My 66 year old Mom bakes up a storm, does all the hostess things and somehow still looks amazing in that dress and I swear has more energy than the energizer bunny. You won’t understand unless you witness it, but it’s true. I’m just here taking notes guys, don’t mind me! In all seriousness though, I am so glad I learned so much about being a southern lady- the etiquette, decorating, hosting, work ethic and all from my mom. This pie included. But can we talk about these gorgeous Draper James Dresses for a minute- because that’s my forté…

I was instantly drawn to the Draper James Holiday Collection because of the festive plaids, beautiful bow details. gorgeous red and pink hues, and the feminine silhouettes. I knew they would be the perfect classic-modern pieces for our time together at Double Oaks Bed and Breakfast enjoying this Apple Pear Pie. If you don’t think you can mix florals with plaids, well guess again, because we did it and it all looked fabulous together! I think that’s part of being the new era of Southern women. We have to switch it up and push boundaries of old principles every now and then, while staying true to who we are.

We had the best day enjoying front porch sips and sits in these dresses. We especially enjoyed delicious pie and time together.

To pair with the pie, I also used Jackson Morgan Southern Cream, Salted Caramel Flavor. Just mix two parts salted caramel with 1 part apple whiskey. Chop up an apple into pieces and freeze, creating your ice for the drink, then top it off with a drizzle of caramel and these matching adorable paper straws from Coterie party Draper James Collection! Now just time to enjoy the cheers, food and company.

Mom’s Apple Pear Pie Recipe

Ingredients:

Nilla Wafers- 48 crushed, one box will have more than you need

1/4 cup light brown sugar, firmly packed

9 Tbsp unsalted butter, melted

1 refrigerated pie crust

3 oz. Philadelphia Cream Cheese, softened

3 large baking apples, peeled & sliced (we like granny smith and honey crisp)

2 Pears, peeled and sliced

1/3 cup granulated sugar

1/4 cup flour

1/2 tsp ground cinnamon

Directions:

Preheat oven to 375 degrees

Crush the wafers in a gallon ziplock bag using the bottom of a glass or rolling pin

Mix your wafer crumbs, brown sugar and melted butter until well blended and set aside

Roll out your pie crust into a 9 inch pie plate

Spread the cream cheese onto the bottom of the crust, then sprinkle with half of the wafer crumb mixture

Next combine your peeled and sliced fruit in a large bowl with the granulated sugar, flour and cinnamon, tossing to coat

Spoon fruit mixture over crumb layer in the pie crust

Sprinkle with remaining crumb mixture to lightly cover the entire top

Now, Bake 35 minutes or until fruit is tender and crust is lightly browned, covering loosely with foil after 25 minutes (prevents the crust from over-browning)

Cool on a wire rack

Enjoy!
