The Secret to Styling a Scarf

Styling a scarf should be simple and fun, not overwhelming and confusing! I love cute, cozy scarfs this time in the season as a layering piece adding extra warmth and style to an outfit. What I don’t love is struggling to get the scarf on easily and it messing up my hair in the process. Anyone else? That’s why today I want to share with you the secret to styling a scarf with this adorable under $20 scarf I recently scooped up from Target!

First, when shopping for a scarf, I like a fun floral pattern or classic check or windowpane style like this one. It comes in another pretty neutral color too! I tend to go for scarves that are thick and soft, but not overly thick to where my hair will look funny and puffed out around it.

The second tip I have for you is if you pick a patterned or checked scarf, keep your top/sweater solid and simple. Pull out a basic top in a color you want to bring out that’s in the scarf too. Or if you are planning on wearing a simple solid tee that day, why not add in a scarf taking your basic outfit to next level cute and polished? The only time I break the “solid and simple” rule is for a good old classic Navy and white striped or black and white striped long sleeve tee. It’s basic enough but can make a really fun look with a plaid scarf in the right Fall colors.

Last tip! The easiest way to wear this type of scarf without messing up your hair or taking a lot of time to make it look cute is to simply wrap it around your neck from the front, leaving one long end down in the front and not pulling the other long end around to the front, instead letting it fall behind your shoulder in the back. Also makes the scarf visible from behind! See photo below.
