Mud Room Makeover

Our mud room, or drop zone, is the first thing we see when we enter our home (from the garage of course) and the last thing we see before leaving for a busy day. With all of the time at home lately, I felt compelled to get this space tip-top ready for when we head back out to our on-the-go lifestyle. I think having an organized space is helpful in enabling us to show up with a clear head space and on-time, for an overall better start, or finish to the day. Not having to see clutter, trip over shoes, or restlessly search for whatever it is I need (like keys, sunglasses, mail etc) before scurrying out the door, is such a great thing for my mental sanity. Today, I’m sharing the easy ways we got this space in tip-top shape, organized, and looking pretty so you can do the same!

The first thing we started with was this painting Mark and I did with an Art therapist on his second to last chemotherapy treatment. Seeing this picture instantly brings joy to our face as it’s something beautiful we created together while going through an incredibly challenging time. It’s a good reminder that through Christ, we can do all things, and is proof that good things can come from bad situations (like getting Archie!). Starting the day with that mentality is always a good thing.

Next, I knew I wanted to carry the classic, calming blue and white color palette I had created in our nearby kitchen through the runner rug and other elements of design like tea towels and ginger gars filled with flowers, into the mud room space too. So I found this incredibly budget friendly, made of good quality, blue and white floral rug for the entry way. It’s the perfect thing to sink your feet on once slipping off your shoes, and Archie clearly doesn’t mind it at all either.

Speaking of shoes…I can’t stand seeing my husbands shoes all over the place. And because he’s the typical guy he always has his shoes downstairs, and all over the place…never in the closet where they belong! So, with a little training and the purchase of these very durable and affordable tan wicker baskets, the shoe disaster was solved. Now he has a place to put his many shoes when he comes through the door. Nice, neat and tucked away, yet still providing easy access to slip them back on to run out again! See more wicker basket options and sizes here.

Which brings me next to the pretty white hydrangea pillow and custom blue and white striped bench cushion I ordered. Here’s where it got a little more expensive, but I still think is totally worth it, because it makes Mark more app to actually sit down on the bench and follow the shoe protocol. This just makes for a much more “stress-less” getting ready to getting out the door, type of situation. I also think the cushion and pillow really tie in the color palette nicely, while protecting the painted wood finish, making the space extra cozy and cute! Also, It keeps Archie (who is not too happy about it), away from licking and chewing our shoes!

Last, to complete the look, I added smaller sized baskets up top (these all came from target on sale, just measure before you order or go) and large blue and white floral bins on the top ledge for thorough organization and cohesive, complete design. This really finishes the look and the tiny baskets work great for odds and ends things you may want to grab before heading out, like chapstick, baseball caps, air pods, sunglasses, mail, loose change, etc. Target seems to have the best selection of different sized and colored baskets. The hooks that we’re already mounted worked great for my handbags (because I switch them out) and Archies Leash for quick access to harness him up for Spring walks.

Now we have a put together, clutter free space that’s as practical as it is pretty!

I hope this has inspired you to create your own happy space in your mudroom! Commissionable links & sources from today’s post are linked below.
